SUMMER

Summer is a wonderful time to visit Norway.  The days get longer and warmer, the snow reluctantly melts allowing a riot of new life to climb up from the valleys floors into the mountains. For a brief moment it is as if winter never had it icy grip on these majestic landscape.  Briefly anyway.

We offer courses in

Mountaineering

All summer skills courses follow the Norwegian Fjellsports standard, and as with other courses  you will receive a diploma / certificate indicating you have  undertaken a skills course that meets these standards.

From “zero to hero” Mountaineering Courses

Mountaineering fjellsportsThese courses take you from a beginner to becoming a competent mountaineer, gaining skills to tackle your dream mountains.  The course is mainly focused on general mountaineering skills and includes glacier travel, scrambling, easy climbing, rappelling and buddy rescue. At the end of this course you will have a ‘tool box’ of skills that can be deployed to take you up your dream mountain, in a safe and competent manner.

This course is based in Valdres, Hemsedal and the Jotunheim and runs for 6 days. Participants should have some experience of mountaineering before the course but may wish to crank it up a bit to tackle more technical peaks. There will be at least two full days of mountaineering that will include a glacier crossing before scrambling/climbing up a peak.  You need to be fairly fit for this course to get the most out it, but we would try our best to have lighter days between the full mountaineering days.

Transport will be on snowshoes and/or skis depending on the tour.

For some trips that enter into the “heartland” of the Jotunheim we will travel on skis, be it on randonee or nordic.  We find that it is too impractical to go deep into the mountains on snow shoes.  As some of the approaches are relatively flat, fitness is more an issue than ability to stay on your feet.

At the end of the course you will receive a diploma.

Advanced Mountaineering Courses

If you have experience and competence as a mountaineer already and want to test yourself and learn more, then this is the course for you.  This builds from your previous experience or from the “zero to hero” mountaineering course that you did the year before.  We build from your experience, deepening your understanding of mountaineering and climbing techniques and undertake some arduous mountaineering trips including high level bivi’s.

The course is based in Valdres, Hemsedal and the Jotunheim and runs for 6 days. It would be expected that you have a good level of fitness for this course.  For this we mean the ability to undertake two arduous mountaineering days back-to-back.

Transport will be on snowshoes and/or skis, depending on the tour.

Touring

With the cold dark months of winter finally over, the warmer longer days of Spring offer opportunities to tour through the Jotunheim mountains.  Traditionally, Nordic skiing is carried out during Spring, with the locals touring between hut to hut.

Jotunheim Tour from hut to hut

Often considered the pearl of all tours, this long tour crosses mountain passes and frozen lakes, as it winds its way through the “heartland” of the Jotunheim.  The tour wanders through the valleys, crossing mountain passes and frozen lakes, with the staggering beauty of the Norwegian alpine mountains watching over you.  We overnight in traditional mountains huts that are scattered through the valleys.  Most of the huts are owned by the “Den Norske Turistforeningen” which provide simple accommodation.  Some of the huts are self catering,  while others are more simple, hotel style.  Each place has its own charm and accommodation price to suit nearly every pocket.

The tour runs over 7 days.  This allows one extra day for bad weather and/or take in a simple peak.  For example, Glittertinden, the second highest peak in Norway.

This is a long tour within mountainous terrain and touring is undertaken on Nordic mountain skis. It is essential that all course participants are generally fairly fit as the tour days can be long. It is also recommended that you are competent with Nordic skiing, however, this is not absolutely essential. If you have any concerns about your levels of fitness or of your competence with Nordic Skiing, please contact us.
